Description

Sehyung Kim (*1987)
Kodurae (2013)
for violin, viola, cello, double bass and piano

Before the commencement of the son buddhism worship ceremony (Korean version of zen buddhism), everyone who enters makes bows regardless of what other participants of the ceremony are doing. The sequence of actions is as follows: a slight bow – three bows – the final bow – a slight bow; i.e. there will be five full bows in total. These five bows symbolize five musical instruments. The three main, central bows are represented by three flageolets of different pitch, the sonorous result of which is always the same. As a result, we hear the same pitch, which, however, undergoes microtonal changes with each new variation of flageolet sounding.
