Presentation
First composition academy by Ensemble Linea, in collaboration with Cordes-sur-Ciel Festival.
In the heart of Occitanie, the beautiful village of Cordes-sur-Ciel has hosted the greatest performers and composers for fifty years, for a unique time of concerts, research, creation and sharing. From Gustav Leonhardt to Thomas Adès, from Jordi Savall to Henri Dutilleux or György Kurtag, the Festival shows a committed eclecticism, manifested by the regular presence of contemporary creation, diversity of repertoires and variety of formats offered.
In 2020, Linea Ensemble played numerous concerts there, combining new works and revisited classical repertoire within the medieval village in a unique friendliness and proximity. This first Composition Academy of the Ensemble Linea fits logically in this history.
For the first edition, Linea choses to make good use of its musician’s versatility in order to offer an entirely new training model and to approach historical instruments in an original way. Their use in baroque or classical repertoires isn’t motivated only by historical reasons, but also by their sound and technical possibilities, which are difficult to find on modern instruments. There is therefore a specific world of sounds and techniques to historical instruments.
Nothing prevents these sound universes from developing themselves and increase sound possibilities offered to creators. Linea Ensemble will be supporting young composers both as a contemporary ensemble and with performers practicing and exploring historical instruments.
The luthier Christian Urbita will provide expertise on the construction of instruments, which, like the composition, is based on a global project, ranging from the choice of century-old forests where he selects his wood, to the design of futuristic violins. He will intervene in interaction with the composers and the possibilities of extended techniques and preparation.

Process
An important place is given to the research dimension. Each historic instrument will be presented in details in advance by videoconference and then on place. Upon selection, performers will be available to experiment with composers.
Each composer will write a new work for a distribution previously defined. This work will be played and recorded during the Festival opening concert. This composition work will be supervised by teachers both during the Academy and the months before during streamed individual lessons. Professors and students will also give presentations of their own work.

• Individual lessons
• Group lessons
• Musicians / composers working sessions beforehand of the Academy
• Presentation by professor and each student of his artistic approach and a selection of works
• All the old instruments will be presented ahead of time, by videoconference, with their particular possibilities, techniques and limits ;
• Workshop rehearsals ;
• Public concerts presenting the final works, with audio recording.
