A Symposium on Composition Pedagogy

Teaching Composition:
A Symposium on Composition Pedagogy
October 21-22, 2022
University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC)

Composers often teach composition lessons and classes after completing their education, yet very few receive any training in composition pedagogy. Other musicians may incorporate improvisation, composition, and creative music making into their classes and lessons. Our goal in this symposium is to foster a conversation through sharing ideas and concerns around teaching this uniquely creative musical pursuit.

We welcome composers, teachers, and pedagogues to join a community inquiry into teaching techniques and philosophies. The series of papers and workshops selected are designed to begin a national conversation on composition pedagogy.

James Mobberley, Curators’ Distinguished Emeritus Professor, Conservatory at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, will present the keynote address.

We strongly encourage you to pre-register for the conference by the priority deadline of September 15 using this form: forms.gle. Grant funding has enabled us to present the symposium with no registration fee, but knowing attendance numbers will enable us to plan. Each priority registration will include complimentary passes to all Livewire concerts, to be held Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evening that weekend.
