The Saint Petersburg Contemporary Music Center «reMusik.org» announces the VII St. Petersburg International New Music Festival, taking place from May 25th — 31st, 2020. The reMusik.org Festival is a point of intersection where the diverse world views of contemporary composers meet at a crossroads of musical paths that have emerged in the past few years. The festival offers various musical concepts that facilitate the learning and understanding of a new, unique musical language of numerous dialects created by late 20th century and 21st century composers.
The festival program has numerous highlights; instead of relying on the form of traditional concerts it will be additionally offering master classes, pre-rehearsal talks, scientific conference, forum, presentations, educational lectures and workshops. The concerts themselves are designed to be inherently educational. And an emphasis on chamber ensemble programming allows the opportunity to hear both young emerging groups and longtime leaders of the European contemporary music scene, provoking creative discussions and a mutual exchange of ideas in the artistic community.
Within the framework of the 2020 festival, reMusik.org offers a composition course which will be held from May 21st — June 1st in St. Petersburg, Russia. This creative composing lab is an exciting opportunity for young and emerging composers from around the world. Thirty-six composers will be selected through a portfolio application process to meet and work with honors composers and internationally-acclaimed ensembles invited to this year’s festival.
Selected composers will participate in the festival’s events, master classes, reading sessions and workshops, as well as receive a professional live recording of their work at one of the festival concerts. Participants will spend the day learning techniques, gaining ideas, and trying new things out with a focus on composing under direction esteemed faculty: Joanna Bailie (United Kingdom), Oscar Bianchi (Switzerland), Pierluigi Billone (Italy), Raphaël Cendo (France), Yuri Kasparov (Russia), and Dmitri Kourliandski (Russia). This project curated by composer Alexander Khubeev.
The festival will be held in distinguished venues around the city, including the Mariinsky Theatre Concert Hall, the New Stage of the Alexandrinsky Theater, the St. Petersburg State Philharmonic, St. Petersburg State Conservatory, Masterskaya M. K. Anikushina, St. John’s Church Jaani Kirik, the Creative Space of the Lumiere Hall, and others.
Internationally-renowned musical collectives will be performing, such as Saint Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra (Russia), Les Percussions de Strasbourg (France), Adapter (Germany), Lemniscate (Switzerland), Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble (Russia), defunensemble (Finland), Trio SÆITENWIND (Switzerland), Duo Mixed Sound Personnel (Germany) and more. The program of the festival consists exclusively of world premieres and Russian premieres, reaffirming St. Petersburg as a center of world culture, and strengthening its distinction as the cultural capital of Russia.
The Composition Course gives participants access to distinguished composers, workshops, composition lessons, lectures and master classes while affording each participant ample time to compose in a relaxed environment and enjoying from the festival concerts and its other events.
During the 10 days, participants will have individual lessons with the three tutors at least, and they are welcome to attend at any time, and as much or as little as their Course activities allow, to observe other lessons and workshops. Each participant will have the opportunity to supervise the preparation of his/her own work from the very beginning to its performance at the concert or workshop, may discuss the composition and execution aspects of his/her work with the tutors and the ensemble’s directors or may have personal contact with the individual instrumentalists.
