Each composer may submit one piece for consideration.
Submissions must be between 1 – 12 minutes in duration.
Works composed after 2012 are eligible.
Works of any style, aesthetic, and notation are acceptable.
There is no submission fee. If you would like to support the UNK New Music Series and Festival with a tax-deductible donation, you can do so here: nufoundation.org/fund/01139600/
Though we hope to meet all selected composers, there is no obligation or requirement to attend the festival.
The guest artists for the 2023 UNK New Music Festival will be the Chartreuse String Trio. Uniquely committed to repeat performances and developing the string trio repertoire through adventurous commissions, Chartreuse has premiered works by dozens of composers and toured extensively in the U.S. Northeast, Midwest, and California, as well as in Norway. Cleveland Classical described the trio in concert as “a maelstrom almost tactile in its grittiness” and “as much fun to watch as to listen to.”
There are six categories for submission:
Category 1: Works for string trio to be performed by Chartreuse.
Category 2: UNK-Provided Performers. Solo and chamber scores for subsets (1-5 performers) of the following instruments and voices (one performer unless stated otherwise) with or without electronics:
Flute
Oboe
Clarinet
Alto Saxophone
Trumpet
Euphonium
Double Bass
Piano
Percussion (up to 2 performers, see the FAQ for instrument availabilities)
Baritone Voice (G2 – G4)
Category 3: Open-Instrumentation scores for the UNK New Music Ensemble.
The UNK New Music Ensemble is a student ensemble, often consisting of 7-10 undergraduate performers. Our instrumentation changes every semester, and so we welcome submissions of scores of unspecified/indeterminate instrumentation (including graphic and text-based scores) for performance.
Category 4: Improvisation works using Indra Software. We will be looking to select up to 3 pieces for performance and/or workshop using composer and technologist Drake Andersen’s Indra software for ensemble improvisation with a conductor. Composers interested in submitting works for this software should first read the online information about the software, found here: creativeinteraction.org/indra
If you have any questions regarding Indra, please contact Dr. Andersen via email: drake@drakeandersen.com
Category 5: Composer-provided performers. Please include performer information/bio with your submission.
Category 6: Fixed-media Electroacoustic pieces up to 5.1.
Questions can be sent to UNKnewmusic@gmail.com
