What is Re: Formers LAB?
This is a four-day laboratory, where participants will meet with prominent contemporary musicians from different countries, learn about the possibilities of the saxophone in modern music and get the experience of combining Indian rhythms with the timbres of Western instruments.
The program is divided into two categories. Each of them includes online and offline lectures, score discussions and one-to-one consultations. All curators will give lectures, participate in the discussion of the presented scores and conduct individual consultations with the participants.
CATEGORY I: will help expand the knowledge of young composers about the possibilities of the classical saxophone and apply them in practice in writing solo or chamber compositions with the participation of this instrument.
Composers are invited to work offline and online with curators, outstanding musicians of our time: the legend of the avant-garde, the “star” of the toy piano and the first performer of Cage and Krum’s plays, Margaret Leng Tan (Singapore-USA), Stockhausen’s student, laureate of contemporary music competitions, Nino Zhvania (Georgia ), classical saxophonists, laureates of international competitions Vitaly Vatuley (Russia) and Gordon Tudor (Croatia), as well as the composer who wrote the largest number of works for saxophone in the XX century – Jacob TV (Jacob ter Veldhuis) (Netherlands), leading figure of Indian classical music B With Manjunath (India).
New scores during Re: Formers LAB will be performed by musicians of the festival of actual classics Re: Formers: saxophonist Vitaly Vatulya, violinist Boris Brovtsyn, viola player Sergei Poltavsky, cellist Yevgeny Tonkha, pianist Maria Nemtsova and others.
CATEGORY II: offers a unique opportunity to work with the luminary of classical Indian music B S Manjunath, the experience of deepening and combining Indian classical rhythms and the sound of Western instruments: saxophone, violin and piano. BS Manjunath will give an online lecture on Indian rhythmic fundamentals, and composers will be able to immediately hear the sound of their music.
Premieres of the best works of both categories will take place at the opening of the Re: Formers festival in October 2021 at the Moscow P.I. Tchaikovsky.
