MusCan 2021 Virtual Conference

The Canadian University Music Society (MusCan) is pleased to announce a call for scores to be performed at its next annual conference, May 31 – June 4, 2021. The conference will be hosted online by the University of Alberta, Department of Music. We acknowledge that the University of Alberta campus is situated in Treaty 6 territory and Homeland of the Métis, a traditional gathering place for diverse Indigenous peoples including the Cree, Blackfoot, Métis, Nakota Sioux, Iroquois, Dene, Ojibway/ Saulteaux/Anishinaabe, and Inuit peoples. We are also please to hold this conference in partnership with the Canadian Music Centre.

Compositions in any contemporary musical style or aesthetic are welcome.

Instrumentation: Any combination of the following instruments and/or voices are available:

Instruments: saxophone (any), trumpet, trombone (tenor), low brass (tenor or bass trombone, euphonium, tuba), violin (2), cello, bassoon, piano, percussion (or drum set).
Voices: tenor.
Compositions that include an electronic component will also be considered. Compositions with live performers with fixed electroacoustic playback or live electronics, as well as acousmatic (fixed) works are welcome. Playback will be Stereo.

Performance faculty of the University of Alberta Department of Music will perform the selected works as part of a concert of contemporary music to be presented on June 3rd, 2021. As many submissions as possible will be performed in this concert. Students who submit scores may be eligible for consideration in the MusCan Composition Competition (see separate call: 2021 Student Composition Competition).

Composers whose scores have been selected for performance are required to attend the online concert, including a rehearsal and, in the case of works that include electronics, technical rehearsals (and see remarks regarding MusCan membership and Conference registration).

Conditions for submitting scores:

Submission of a score to the competition denotes willingness to become a member of MusCan and willingness to register and attend the 2021 MusCan Conference. Composers whose scores are selected for performance must be members of MusCan before their submissions can be accepted for inclusion for the program and must register for the Congress 2021 of the Humanities and Social Sciences and the MusCan 2021 conference by March 31, 2021. Annual MusCan membership dues for 2021 are $95 for regular members, and $50 for part-time faculty, students, independent scholars, and retired persons. MusCan membership information is available through its web site www.muscan.org.
Submit scores online (on.cmccanada.org) no later than 6:00 pm EST on January 22, 2021. Include one copy of each score as a pdf file, a recording as an mp3 file and a biography of no more than 100 words. Uploaded scores should not give any indication of the composer’s name or affiliation(s). Works that include electronics must also include a detailed list of technical requirements and, where possible, a stereo recording of the work.
Each composer may submit up to two scores. Scores must have a duration between 6 and 14 minutes.
Scores chosen for performance will be announced by March 15th, 2021.

A composer whose work is selected for performance must submit, by April 1st, 2021:
a set of parts for the work chosen;
proof of paid-up MusCan membership for 2021 and proof of MusCan 2021 conference registration.
MusCan also has submission streams for paper presentations, lecture-recitals, and other opportunities for participant contributions.
