ManiFeste, the IRCAM multidisciplinary festival and academy, is a gathering of creative artists in Paris, combining music with other disciplines: theater, dance, digital arts, and visual arts.This year, after the cancellation of the 2020 edition and the necessary adaptations due to sanitary restrictions for the 2021 edition, the IRCAM team wished to recapture the essence of the academy’s spirit: emulation generated by the collective. “WRITING ON THE WALLS”
HOW TO EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED: ON IMPROVISING, TRANSCRIBING AND SCORE-WRITING

Austrian composer Bernhard Lang is offering to 10 improvisation performers and laptop composers, DJ, to join the group of 4 musicians Gerald Preinfalk, saxophone, Robert Lepenik, electric guitar, Dimitrios Polisoidis, viola, Dieb13, electronic music, to be part of a 6-day long workshop.

The lectures/workshops focus on reflecting the history and development of improvisation between the ’90s and the early 2000s; moreover the focus will be on the relationship between written scores and improvised music, and on projects, which tried to combine both;
• Improvising in the ’90s: Free Rock, Coltrane, electronics
• Improvising in the 2000s : Computer improvisations, laptop music
• Improvising in Loops: Loop aesthetics
• Improvising with Machines: Loop generators
• Improvisation with Texts: Existing Scores as starting points & limits of improvisation
• Series VI GAMES: Game – based pieces as synthesis of improvisation and written composition.

After a short lecture in the individual concepts, an improvisation-session is started, focusing on the strategies presented in the lecture. Everybody in the group is invited to participate; it is recorded and analyzed collectively afterwards.

The workshop will conclude with a concert open to the public during ManiFeste, presenting a new work from the Games series.

Applicants must:
• be born after January 1, 1990
• not have taken part two other times in any other ManiFeste Academy workshop
• be able to speak and understand English

Applicants must create an account (or use an existing account) on the ULYSSES platform, complete their profile and click on “Apply” from the “MANIFESTE-2022 Collaboratory Paris – Improvisation Workshop” call page, then:
• fill in personal information (last name, first name, age, nationality, address, cell phone number, legal ID, ID photo which may be used by IRCAM for access badges)
• list their improvisation experience, if any
• write a short biography (800 characters MAXIMUM) which may be used by IRCAM for concert programs
• write a cover letter, explaining the subjects that interest them in improvisation composition, or a text/ideas they would like to develop during the workshop (pdf or jpg)
• submit 2 or 3 recent works of their own composition or improvisation sessions (mp4 video or YouTube link)
• laptop composers are requested to submit electronics patch of their own in Work#1- Please, indicate a PERMANENT LINK WITH NO PASSWORD, from another website or platform (in Link part) – Join a maximum 1-page (pdf or jpg) describing how you built your patch.

Registration fee: 300 €
Registration fees due: Tuesday, March 15, 2022

Applicants selected to participate, but who are not able to do the following, will be excluded from the workshop:

– attend the preparatory session (video conference) in April 2022
– pay their registration fees by March 15, 2022

Accepted applicants who do not respect the framework proposed by the pedagogical team or who are absent during the workshop, even partially, will have their participation automatically cancelled without possibility of appeal and without reimbursement of their registration fees.

The Academy does not provide any scholarships, nor reimburse travel or accommodation fees. Accepted applicants must find their own lodging.

Composers who do not respect the conditions defined by faculty or who are absent during the workshop, even partially, will have their participation automatically cancelled without possibility of appeal and without reimbursement of their registration fees.
Registration fees will be refunded if the academy is cancelled due measures in connection with COVID-19 restrictions. However, disruptions in transportation, health recommendations and quarantine, or testing requirements will be the responsibility of the applicant, who is responsible for making arrangements to meet the COVID-19 requirements both in his or her home country and upon arrival in France.
