ICEBERG Institute 2023 – Composition Intensive in Vienna, Austria

OVERVIEW

ICEBERG New Music is thrilled to announce the 2023 ICEBERG Institute, a rigorous, 2-week course of workshops, master classes, concerts and presentations for up to 16 young and emerging composers. Located in the heart of Vienna, one of the most iconic musical cities in the world, this is a singular opportunity for participants to make connections and hone their craft. Participants will receive daily input and feedback from composition faculty and distinguished guest faculty, and have their music performed and recorded by award-winning ensembles and soloists.

DATES

The 2023 ICEBERG Institute will be held from July 17-28, 2023. Participants should plan to arrive in Vienna on July 16, and depart on July 29.

LOCATION AND FACILITIES

Lessons, masterclasses, and forums during the 2023 ICEBERG Institute will be held at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien (Vienna University for Music and the Performing Arts), Penzingerstraße campus. The institute’s final concert will take place in the University’s arena, a turn-of-the-century recital hall that has been preserved since Gustav Mahler, Hugo Wolf, and others were students.

The Penzingerstraße campus is located near the historic Schönbrunn Palace, a short metro ride from the center of the city. Participants will be housed in air-conditioned accommodations near campus, and will receive a metro pass to provide them free transportation within Vienna. The final concert will be recorded, and participants will receive high-quality audio and video records of their work. Two meals every weekday are included with the price of tuition.

COMPOSITION FACULTY

Oscar Bianchi (In-Person Guest Faculty) is a Gaudeamus Award-winning Italian/Swiss composer whose music has been performed by orchestras and chamber ensembles around the world. Recent collaborations include projects with Ensemble Moderne, JACK Quartet, The International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), Philharmonic radio Orchestra of France, and many others. www.oscarbianchi.com

Adrián Artacho (In-Person Guest Faculty) is a composer whose work extends from theater and dance to electroacoustic music & multimedia. Artacho is also an active performer of live electronics in different configurations, including self-built musical instruments, which contributes to the unusual configuration of musicians in brainchild. He is also an artistic researcher at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, where he explores new uses of technology in live performances. http://www.artacho.at/

Alex Burtzos (In-Person Faculty) is the artistic director of ICEBERG New Music, and the Chair of Composition Studies at the University of Central Florida. His music has been performed across four continents, and earned accolades from organizations in North America, Europe, and Asia. Victor Baez (In-Person Faculty) is a Fulbright Scholar whose recent collaborations include the Webern Symphony Orchestra, Yarn/Wire, Jenny Lin, and others. Jack Frerer (In-Person Faculty) is the recipient of a Charles Ives Scholarship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a Morton Gould Composers Award from ASCAP, the Suzanne and Lee Ettelson Composers Award, the Brian Israel Prize from the Society for New Music, and winner of both the Juilliard Orchestra and Gena Raps Chamber Music competitions. He was a Tanglewood composition fellow for 2019, a composer for the New York City Ballet’s 2019 Choreographic Institute, and is currently Composer-in-Residence with the Arapahoe Philharmonic. https://www.jackfrerer.com/

Max Grafe (In-Person Faculty) has received several of the most prestigious awards available to emerging American composers, including a Charles Ives Scholarship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a William Schuman Prize from BMI, two consecutive Palmer Dixon Prizes from the Juilliard School, and a Morton Gould Young Composer Award from ASCAP. He is a member of the music faculties at Montclair State University and the Kaufman Music Center.

ENSEMBLE IN RESIDENCE

Founded in 2013, Trio Immersio (Ensemble in Residence) won the Suzuki-Enami Foundation prize at the 2013 Fidelio competition within two months of its existence, and has been recognized with a number of awards and prizes since. Notably, Trio Immersio received the “New Sound of Austrian Music” program of the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, given to select musicians to represent the musical culture and traditions of Austria all over the globe. They are also the winner of the Bank of Austria Arts Prize 2016, and are proud members of the Le Dimore del Quartetto association.

Trio Immersio has performed at prestigious venues including the Musikverein Wien, Wiener Konzerthaus, RadioKulturhaus Wien, Flagey in Brussels, Royal Danish Opera, Teatru Manoel in Malta, Theatre Sorano in Dakar, CRR Concer Salonu in Istanbul, Schönberg Centre, Ancient Amphitheater in Bodrum, Kyiv Philharmonie, Georgian National Parliamentary Library. Active worldwide, Trio Immersio has toured extensively in the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Japan.

MUSICIANS IN RESIDENCE

Joel Diegert (saxophones) is a dynamic musician, representing a new young generation of international saxophonists. He has won prizes at several major international competitions and performs in the US and throughout Europe. He has appeared in concerts at the RadioKulturhaus (Vienna), Konzerthaus (Vienna), and Muzikgebouw (Amsterdam), and appearances at festivals such as Wien Modern (Vienna), Synthermeia Festival (Greece), and many of the Saxophone World Congresses held around the globe. He is a member the saxophone quintet FiveSax and the piano-saxophone duo Solaris.

Liila Leijala (cello) is a finalist in the EBU Young Soloist competition and prize winner in several other international competitions. She has performed widely all over in Europe, USA and Asia in recitals and as a soloist. Leijala debuted in Wiener Musikverein in October 2013 in “Junge Talente” concert series. As a chamber musician, Leijala has worked with the Barbirolli Quartet in London, and in Gironcoli Quartet Vienna. With Gironcoli Quartet she received first prize in the International Chamber Music Competition in Bled 2013.

Alfredo Ovalles (piano) has received numerous awards, including first prize in the VIII International “Franz Schubert” Competition in Bulgaria, second prize in the IV “María Clara Cullell International Piano Competition” in San José de Costa Rica, and the 14th Osaka International Music Competition in Japan. Alfredo is in demand as a soloist and chamber musician internationally. Engagements have taken him to Belarus, Germany, Poland, Romania, Spain, and the Dominican Republic, among others, performing at wonderful venues including the Berliner Philharmonie, the Wiener Konzerthaus, and King’s Place in London.

SCHEDULE

The 2023 ICEBERG Institute will be held from July 17-28, 2023. It is designed to provide composers with daily instruction and feedback, multiple opportunities to hear their music workshopped and performed, free time to write and study, and opportunities to explore their surroundings. Participants will share their work in masterclass settings, and receive feedback from distinguished guest faculty. Participants will also enjoy a one-day excursion to Heiligenstadt and a guided tour of the Heiligenstadt Beethoven Museum.

COST OF ATTENDANCE

COURSE FEE: €3450 (participants), €850 (auditors)

Full course fee includes: All classes and workshops, all transportation within Vienna, air-conditioned accommodations, daily breakfast and lunch (weekdays), Beethoven Museum tour, concert performance, high-quality audio and video recording.

Auditor course fee includes: All classes and workshops (listener only), lunch (weekdays), Beethoven Museum tour, concert admission.

Some financial aid is available, and will be awarded to full participants on a need-based basis. Please note that this financial aid is limited, and will cover only a portion of the cost of attendance.
