In this time of difficulty in the arts community, the Bellevue Chamber Chorus desires to create opportunities for emerging composers to create new music. Our organization is calling for scores and will award a first-prize winner $500.
The piece will be featured in a concert titled “An International Poetry Slam” that will present seven different poets from seven different countries including Italy, Germany, England, Chile, and Canada. The composer may choose to set any text by either Rabindranath Tagore (India) or Walt Whitman (United States).
Call for Scores:
the chorus will be accepting engraved scores for SATB choir through December 31st, 2020. Pieces must be under six minutes long. One winner will be selected by January 10th, 2021, and payment of $500 will be issued to one winner in January of 2021 upon receipt of the composer’s final pdf of the engraved score, including a piano reduction and any other editorial requests from our Artistic Director.
Eligibility:
the composer must be a verified student [as of Fall 2020] working on a music degree program at the undergraduate or graduate level. No age restriction. The text of the piece must be by Rabindranath Tagore (India) or Walt Whitman (United States): any poem by either of these two poets is acceptable. Many of the texts by those two poets are in the public domain; however, the composer must verify that the text is either in the public domain or that the composer has secured rights.
Premiere:
The Bellevue Chamber Chorus will have premiere and recording rights, subject to any two dates in 2021 through the end of 2023, however the specific concert dates of the premiere are to be determined until the chorus reconvenes. The chorus will record this concert and owns the rights to that recording, though a free copy will be given to the composer.
Recommendations:
it is suggested that the piece be anywhere between three to five minutes and be of moderate difficulty level. The Bellevue Chamber Chorus is not a professional chorus, but is a 28-voice auditioned community group with a history of a high level of musicianship. Only moderate levels of divisi are acceptable. The piece should be either a cappella or with piano accompaniment and up to no more than one other instrument, for example, cello, oboe, etc. It is recommended that composers submit a midi rehearsal file with their score.
