To get a high-quality recording of a work – a great, polished portfolio item – can lead to increased access to higher education, increased performance in other calls for scores and competition, work from high-level institutions such as museums and other organizations, commissioning contracts, and much more. It cannot be overstated how much a portfolio item can help a composer in their early stages of their career.
Concertia will not make this a single instance opportunity. In order to positively contribute to careers of under-represented peoples across the world, infrastructure must be established that continues to champion their work. This is exactly that; this will continue to be a part of every season that Concertia presents onward. This will allow for candidates not chosen in this first instance to continue to get their works recorded, and presented.
The selected composers will also be invited to a series of limited workshops with a collection of professionals on the following topics:
1. Professional Development
2. Working through trauma with the arts
3. State of the professional realm
4. Talks with performers
The fellowship portion of this initiative seeks to provide continued support to the composers in the form of guaranteed future performances of their works, future commissions, and professional support through other initiatives.
There will be a prize in the ranges of the following for each of the winners:
1. For the winner of a work to be recorded of three players: $500
2. For the winner of a work to be recorded of two players: $350
3. For the winner of a work to be recorded of a solo performer: $200
There will be an entry fee of $10, with an option for waving depending on status (student, financial hardship, or other extenuating circumstance). This fee is non-refundable.
The virtual concert will consist of a stream, through YouTube and other platforms. The works will be presented in conjunction with a small video presentation by the composers.
Announcements of winners will be made through all platforms available to Concertia, and as such the composers will be given as much exposure as possible. We will partner with schools and organizations as well to give our winners as much exposure as possible going forward.
