Composing in the Wilderness – Lake Clark

After ten years of success with chamber music, Composing in the Wilderness is delighted to be taking our first venture into large-ensemble music. We’ve never done a trip like this before, and we’re REALLY excited about the experience we’ve got planned. Here is what it will look like:

We will select six composers with expertise writing for wind ensemble/concert band and take them on an immersive and inspiring wilderness trip. It will begin with a thrilling flight in a little float plane which will drop participants at the breathtaking Turquoise Lake (In Lake Clark National Park, Alaska). This will be our base of operations while we hike, kayak, and explore the surrounding ridges and hidden ravines. There will be lots of inspiration, adventure, and personal growth, for sure.

Shortly after arrival, each composer will be given a summary description of the piece they will be asked to write (duration, mood, and difficulty level), and then they will use their wilderness experience as inspiration.

After their time in the wilderness, we’ll give the composers three days of secluded reflection time (with electricity and showers) so they can start sketching their musical ideas while the experience is still fresh.

After returning home, the composers will have about six months to compose their new pieces for wind ensemble. Together, these six new works will make a compelling and unique concert-length experience that will be performed in 2024 by our partner ensembles.

We’re delighted to have THREE presenting ensembles so far:
– Tamey Anglley and the SFA Wind Ensemble (Texas) – youtu.be
– Carolyn Barber and the University of Nebraska, Lincoln Wind Ensemble – youtu.be
– The Grand Valley State University Wind Symphony under the direction of Kevin Tutt (Michigan) – www.gvsu.edu

We’re hoping there will be more! (Email us if you know a wind ensemble that might like to be included!)
This trip will be led by founder and adventurer-composer Stephen Lias along with our highly skilled wilderness guides.
This is a bucket-list adventure for band composers with three guaranteed performances! Check out all the details at: www.composinginthewilderness.com
