Call for scores: music by African-American artists

Crossing Borders Music is seeking musical creations by African-American artists for a musical program celebrating Juneteenth. The program will be professionally video-recorded in May 2022 to be shared freely online starting in June 2022 and will remain free online afterwards. We intend to perform the program live in several locations in the Chicago area, COVID-pending. Selected musical compositions will be performed by any combination of the core ensemble string players of Crossing Borders Music: two violinists, a violist, and a cellist. Artists selected for this opportunity will be invited, but not required, to create a short video or write a brief statement introducing their work.
This opportunity is open to African-American artists. Other Black artists whose works relate to African-American liberation may also be considered. Submissions in Western notation may be submitted as PDFs, with accompanying mp3 files welcomed but not required. Artists who don’t use Western notation may submit mp3 files of musical works that could be arranged for a combination of violins, viola, and cello. If neither option works, please contact info@crossingbordersmusic.org.
Crossing Borders Music will purchase selected scores if they are published, or compensate artists for a comparable amount if the score is unpublished. Crossing Borders Music will not provide additional compensation.
To submit, please upload files to Google Drive or DropBox and send an e-mail with the subject line “call for scores submission” to info@crossingbordersmusic.org and provide links to those files.
Submissions may be up to 15 minutes in length.

Composers from all cultural backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
