The Barcelona Modern Ensemble, together with the Institut Français-Barcelona, open the call for dossiers for the “International Composition Course Barcelona Modern-Institut Français”, 8th Edition.
The course is aimed primarily at young composers (selected by open call), which will be headed by a renowned guest composer.
Structured in three meetings of three days each (intensive working days: from 10 to 14 and 16 to 20 hours), selected composers as Active Participants will develop a composition project supervised by one of the guest composers, with the Barcelona Modern Ensemble -Fl, CL, Sx, Vl, Vc, Pno and conductor- as permanent resident ensemble for acoustic music and the Syntagma Piano Duo – piano duet- as guest ensemble for mixed music. Both ensembles will be at the disposal of students for reading sessions, workshops, rehearsals and concerts.
Selected composers from among the Listeners Participants will have a reading session with one of the ensembles of the course. All the Listeners Participants have unlimited access to all course activities.
The course will be held in person with activities including individual and collective masterclasses given by the guest composers, lectures by the participants, guest speakers, instrumental workshops by the musicians of the ensembles, guest ensembles and soloists, reading sessions, open rehearsals and streaming concerts.
The activity finishes with the premiere, in a public concert, of the works composed by the selected composers –as Active Participants- throughout the course.
The course will be held at the Institut Français-Barcelona (carrer de Moià nº 8; 08006, Barcelona) and at the Fundació Phonos – Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Carrer Roc Boronat 138, 08018 Barcelona) between January and June 2022.
First meeting: 12, 13 and 14 January 2022.
Second meeting: 16, 17 and 18 March 2022.
Third meeting: 25, 26 and 27 May 2022 (acoustic music).
8, 9 and 10 June 2022 (mixed music).

Guidelines:
All composers may attend this call, regardless of age or nationality.
Composers interested in participating should send, before December 18th 2021, the following documentation:

-Copy of national identity card or passport.
-Two scores in PDF format.
-Recordings (mp3) of the submitted works, if possible.
14 composers will be selected as Active Participants (composers not selected as Active Participants have the opportunity to attend as Listeners)
12 composers from among the Listeners Participants will be selected for reading sessions. All listening participants also have unlimited access to all course activities.
On December 27th 2021 the results of the call will be communicated via e-mail and posted on the course website and Facebook (including the assigned tutor), as well as will be sent the instrumentation and ensemble options to be chosen by those selected in order of preference.
On December 31st 2021 the assigned instrumentation and ensemble for each Active and Listening participant with Reading Session will be communicated by email. The preferences indicated by each participant will be respected as far as possible.
The registration period for all the Participants ends on January 7th 2022.
-The assistance to the three meetings, in the stipulated course schedule, is mandatory for composers selected as Active Participants (at the third meeting, attendance will be mandatory on the dates to be worked with the ensemble selected for each participant).
-Active participants must send 50% of the work in progressbefore 1 March 2022 (by email in PDF format); and the finished work (full score and parts) before 1 May 2022 -participants with acoustic music with Barcelona Modern Ensemble- or before 8 May 2022 -participants with mixed music with Syntagma Piano Duo-.
-Listening participants with a reading session will realize it with the assigned ensemble (without electronics) at the second or third meeting (to be determined by the organisers). They must send the complete work (full score and parts) two weeks before the beginning of the meeting in which they will do the reading session.
-The maximum duration of the work should NOT exceed 8 minutes.
-The piece worked during the course must be a new creation, created for and during the work in the course, and to be premiered in the final concert. No adaptations or instrumentations of preexisting works are accepted.
-Languages used for the realization of the course are French and English.

Active Participants: 520 €.
Listeners Participants with reading session: 300 €.
