2021 Emerging Composers Competition at The Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York

MYO is hosting an Emerging Composers Competition, open to all unpublished composers under the age of 25 as of July 1, 2022. Division I for composers ages 8 – 17 and Division II for composers ages 18 – 24. Composition categories include SATB Youth Choir (High School students) and Symphony Orchestra (High School students). Compositions will be judged on the basis of their overall artistic merit, including creative vision, originality, and clarity of notation. Special consideration of the relative age and experience of the composer will also be factored into the judging process.

Deadline: Wednesday, December 15, 2021 (All materials must be received by this date)

1. Full score and complete set of parts (PDF form)
2. An unlisted YouTube or audio file (digital or live) rendition of the composition
3. Age Verification – Please provide proof of age. A copy of your birth certificate, passport, or driver’s license is acceptable
4. $25 Application Fee (payable online through PayPal)
5. A short written description of the composition outlining inspirations and important features (250 word maximum)

The winning compositions will be announced by Wednesday, January 12, 2022.
First Place: $500
Second Place: $200
Third Place: $100
The judges reserve the right not to award a prize in either Division.

The Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York (MYO) is committed to fostering a community of talented young musicians from Long Island and providing them with an opportunity to rehearse and perform choral and orchestral masterworks at the highest possible level with recognized leaders in music education and performance. Founded in 1993 by John C. McNeur, MYO has grown from a 15-piece orchestra to seven orchestras and nine choirs, serving over 750 musicians between the ages of 8 and 18. MYO enjoys a rich tradition of international summer performance tours, beginning with the 1997 tour to Germany, France, and Austria through the most recent tour to Berlin, Dresden, Prague, Vienna, and Budapest in July 2018, and looking ahead to the July 2022 Italy Tour.
