hommage for chamber ensemble

 

Dedicated to Wolfgang Rihm’ 60th anniversary. Commissioned by the City of Karlsruhe (Rihm’s hometown); the premiere have been performed by TEMA Ensemble (conductor: Gérard Buquet).

This homage includes a quotation from a letter of Gustave Flaubert that Wolfgang Rihm notates on the edge of his “Musik für drei Streicher”. It comments on a rapid musical condensation that gradually appears to ascend — incomplete, open, undetermined. My composition for nine instruments moves towards this spot, at first fragmentary, groping, only gradually finding a language. Then with ever more outbursts, ecstatic, orbiting. But it seems to miss the imaginary vanishing point…
