Call for Submission: Composition Course reMusik.org

The Saint Petersburg Contemporary Music Center «reMusik.org» announces the VIII St. Petersburg International New Music Festival, taking place from May 21st—June 2nd, 2021. The reMusik.org Festival is a point of intersection where the diverse world views of contemporary composers meet at a crossroads of musical paths that have emerged in the past few years.

The festival will be held in distinguished venues around the city, including the Mariinsky Theatre Concert Hall, the New Stage of the Alexandrinsky Theatre, the St. Petersburg State Philharmonic, St. Petersburg State Conservatory, New Holland and others. Internationally-renowned ensembles will be performing, such as Collegium Novum Zurich (Switzerland), recherche (Germany), Schallfeld (Austria), Konus Quartett (Switzerland), Ensemble C Barré (France), Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble (Russia), GAM-Ensemble (Russia), Vacuum string quartet (Russia), and more. Instead of relying on the form of traditional concerts it will be additionally offering composition course, master classes, scientific conference, presentations, forum, educational lectures and workshops.

The Composition Course will be held from May 21st — June 3rd in St. Petersburg. This creative composing lab is an exciting opportunity for young and emerging composers from around the world. More than 25 composers will be selected through a portfolio application process to meet and work with honors composers and internationally-acclaimed ensembles invited to this year’s festival.

During the 12 days, the Composition Course gives participants access to distinguished composers, concerts, and masterclasses while affording each participant ample time to compose in a relaxed environment and enjoy the famous White Nights Season in St. Petersburg, Russia!

Dates:
The program will run from May 21st (Arrival Date) — June 3rd (Departure Date), 2021 in Saint Petersburg, Russia

Application Deadline:
Group A: 5 February 2021;
Group B: 10 March 2021;
Group C: 1 April 2021;
Free Auditors: 15 May 2021.

Tutors:
Oscar Bianchi (Switzerland), Pierluigi Billone (Italy), Raphaël Cendo (France), Klaus Lang (Austria), Sergej Newski (Russia/Germany), Sarah Nemtsov (Germany), Stefan Prins (Belgium) and Alexander Radvilovich (Russia).

Eligibility:
All composers age 18 and over

Submission Guidelines:
All applications must be submitted online through application form on www.en.remusik.org/academy/

The jury will select at least 25 composers into three groups*: Group A, Group B and Group C. Each group gives participants a possibility to advance their skills through the following opportunities:

Group A
– Minimum 3 hours of individual lessons with 3 different tutors** (Each lesson is 1 hour);
– Performance and professional recording of their work at one of the festival concerts;
– 45-minutes presentation of their work;
– Access to all events and concerts.

Group B
– Minimum 3 hours of individual lessons with 3 different tutors** (Each lesson is 1 hour);
– Performance a part of their work during 1—2 workshops/reading sessions with soloists or ensembles-in-residence;
– 45-minutes presentation of their work;
– Access to all events and concerts.

Group C
– Minimum 3 hours of individual lessons with 3 different tutors** (Each lesson is 1 hour);
– 45-minutes presentation of their work;
– Access to all events and concerts.

Free Auditors
Auditors are welcome to join the St. Petersburg International New Music Festival. This is a great opportunity for anyone wanting to learn from the accomplished artists and be immersed within the excitement of the Festival. All auditors receive all the benefits of observing experienced artists working with students. They will additionally have access to all concerts, and events.

*You may apply for multiple selection groups. reMusik.org reserves the right to choose more or less participants than it’s announced.
** Participants will have individual lessons with 3 or 4 different tutors.

Supplemental Materials:
In addition to the application form, please submit the following:

Group A
– 2-3 scores (submitted electronically in .pdf format via Dropbox, Google Drive or similar);
– Recordings of 1-2 works (submitted electronically via Dropbox, Google Drive or similar);
– Biography.

Notes:
The composer should select one of the two following options of performance of his/her work during the festival:
– The composer agrees to write a new work for one of the ensembles invited to the festival (the lineup distribution will be made by reMusik.org, but participants wishes will be taken into account).
– The composer submits an existing pieces which never performed in Russia. At least one of the scores must be submitted for one of the following lineups:
— flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano (1-5 performers);
— string quartet (1-4 performers);
— saxophone quartet (soprano, alto, tenor, baritone: 2-4 performers);
— tenor-saxophone, electro-guitar, cello, electronics (1-4 performers);
— accordion, electronics, video (1-3 performers);
— solo violin;
— solo flute;
— solo saxophone;
— solo piano.

Adding electronics to each lineup is possible, but before you submit your application, please send your technical rider to check the details.

Please be aware that composers admitted to the composition course (Group A) must send, no later than April 5th, 2021, the score and the instrumental parts of the piece to be used for performance in the concert.

Group B
– 2-3 scores (submitted electronically in .pdf format via Dropbox, Google Drive or similar);
– Recordings of 1-2 works (submitted electronically via Dropbox, Google Drive or similar);
– Biography.

Notes:
Applicants are requested to choose 4 instrumental lineups from the list below for participation in the workshops/reading sessions (the jury accepts 1 or 2 of them):
— flute, oboe, clarinet, violin, viola, cello, piano (4-7 performers);
— flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano (1-5 performers);
— string quartet (1-4 performers);
— violin, cello, piano (1-3 performers);
— electroguitar/classic guitar solo
— accordion solo
— saxophone solo

Group C

– Biography.

Incentives:
1— 3 Participants will be selected to be performed on the next Festival in 2022 and their work to be published by Edition reMusik.org.

Participation Fee:
Group A: €590
Group B: €450
Group C: €290
Free auditors: free

Payment should be made in two parts: after selection results and upon arrival to Saint-Petersburg.

Requirements:
– English Language
– Foreign students will receive an official invitation to the festival from the Saint-Petersburg Contemporary Music Center “reMusik.org”. Students living in countries that have visa services with the Russian Federation, must apply for their visa, independently, at the nearest embassy or consulate of the Russian Federation.
– Travel, housing, living costs and visa expenses are the individual responsibility of the participants and reMusik.org is not responsible for paying that.
– Each participant should take a coronavirus test at least 72 hours before the trip.
