April 1st and 2nd, 2022
The University of Nebraska at Kearney is excited to announce its 20th annual New Music Festival, being held April 1st and 2nd, 2022 on the UNK campus in Kearney, Nebraska. Deadline for receipt is Friday, October 22, 2021.
Call for Scores: All composers are invited to submit one score of no more than 12 minutes in duration. Works involving electronics (5.1), graphic notation, and open instrumentation are welcome.
There is no submission fee. If you would like to support the UNK New Music Series and Festival with a tax-deductible donation, you can do so here: https://nufoundation.org/fund/01139600/
Though we hope to meet all selected composers, there is no obligation to attend the festival.
We are very excited to welcome ~Nois (noissaxophone.com) as our guest artists. ~Nois is a Chicago-based saxophone quartet that defies categorization by working between the boundary of contemporary classical music and experimental improvisation. Founded in 2016 by graduate students at Northwestern University, ~Nois (pronounced “noise”) has quickly emerged as one of the premier young ensembles dedicated to innovative and engaging performances.
There are four categories for submission:
Category 1: UNK-Provided Performers. Solo and chamber scores for subsets of the following instruments and voices with or without electronics:
Flute, Oboe, or Saxophone (one performer)
Clarinet
Trumpet (up to 2 performers)
Euphonium or Tuba (one performer)
Double Bass
Piano (up to 2 performers)
Percussion (up to 3 performers, see the FAQ for instrument availabilities)
Baritone Voice (G2 – G4)
Mezzo-Soprano Voice (F3 – B flat5)
Category 2: Open-Instrumentation scores for the UNK New Music Ensemble.
The UNK New Music Ensemble is a student ensemble, often consisting of 7-10 undergraduate performers. We welcome submissions of open-instrumentation scores (including graphic and text-based scores) for performance.
Category 3: Composer-provided performers. Please include performer information/bio with your submission.
Category 4: Fixed-media Electroacoustic pieces up to 5.1.

FAQ:
Q: May I submit more than one piece?
A: No. Composers may only submit one piece.
Q: May I submit a piece for ~Nois?
A: ~Nois will not be taking submissions for this call. ~Nois was our guest artist for the 2020 UNK New Music Festival; however, due to COVID-19 their performance had to be cancelled. Therefore, ~Nois will be including the pieces they selected for the 2020 Call for Scores on this festival.
Q: May I submit a piece that involves both faculty and student performers?
A: Yes! Our faculty and student performers often collaborate together.
Q: What kinds of percussion instruments do you have?
A: For non-pitched percussion, we have all standard orchestral/band percussion instruments. For pitched percussion, we have the following: Glockenspiel, Crotales (2 octaves), Xylophone, 2 Vibraphones, Marimba (5-octave), Chimes, and Timpani (5). If you have questions regarding specific percussion instruments, please contact us at UNKnewmusic@gmail.com
Q: Do you have any funding to support travel, especially for Category 3 submissions?
A: Unfortunately, we are not able to fund any travel to the festival.
Q: If selected, am I required to attend the festival?
A: While we would love to see all accepted composers, there is no attendance requirement.
Q: Is there a submission fee?
A: No! It is completely free to submit to the UNK New Music Festival. If you would like to support us, please consider donating by clicking on the following link: https://nufoundation.org/fund/01139600/
