The New Music on the Bayou Summer Festival is a chance for contemporary composers to engage with performers in open rehearsals and to have their new works performed by professional ensembles/musicians in an intense four-day event. The central focus of the festival is connecting composers with the unique features of north Louisiana and introducing the communities there to modern chamber music. Performers will be provided. The featured ensembles will be the NMB Percussion Group (up to 5), Duo Per Se (clarinet/piano), and the Delamo Duo (single reeds and keyboard percussion). A wide range of other available instrumentation is listed at newmusiconthebayou.com. Electronic works with or without video are encouraged as well as well as live improvisatory works.
SAFETY PROTOCOLS: Given that COVID pandemic has turned to an endemic, NMB will continuously monitor the health environment and make adjustments as needed to ensure that the festival is a safe environment for all in-person attendees. This will likely include vaccination and/or testing requirements of participants, and the possibility of mask mandates and social distancing at times. As always, we will follow all guidance given by the CDC, the state of Louisiana, and the institutions of ULM and Louisiana Tech.
COMPETITION: The Black Bayou Composition Award will be awarded to the composition that best reflects the connection between music and the natural world. The winner will receive a $500 commission to write a work for the 2023 NMB Festival. Other finalists will receive $100 each. Accepted compositions will be rehearsed in an open forum giving composers the opportunity to work with their performers and experience other rehearsals as well. Concert venues will include ULM Biedenharn Recital Hall, Black Bayou Wildlife Refuge, and the Biedenharn Museum and Gardens.
Up to three works may be submitted at $20 for the first and $5 for each additional work. Four slots are available for virtual participation, preference given to international applicants. All other composers must be at the festival in person in order to have their piece performed. More details are available at newmusiconthebayou.com or by emailing info@newmusiconthebayou.com.
