Young Composer Competition 2022

1st Prize: $40,000 scholarship award over 4 years toward a composition degree at CBU ($10,000 per year).

2nd Prize: $30,000 scholarship award over 4 years toward a composition degree at CBU ($7,500 per year).

3rd Prize: $20,000 scholarship award over 4 years toward a composition degree at CBU ($5,000 per year).

Honorable Mentions: Campus visit, free luncheon and lesson with a member of the CBU composition faculty, and scholarship consideration.

Deadline: Submissions must be received by January 15, 2022
Prize winners will be announced on January 30, 2022 by email (musiccomposition@calbaptist.edu).

Eligibility: Any composers (no age limit & no religious affiliation needed) that are currently enrolled in high school or have already completed high school may. Junior college transfer students and international applicants are also encouraged to apply.

Judging: The composition faculty at California Baptist University – Josh Rodriguez (PhD, UCLA), and Glenn Pickett (DMA, Claremont Graduate University) – will serve as the judging panel. Judges reserve the right to withhold comments regarding submissions and reserve the right to award no prize.

Guidelines: Compositions in any style and instrumentation (chamber, choral, orchestral, band) may be submitted. While the competition is open to all styles, works that fit into the tradition of art music composition are desired. Musical parts of the composition need to be clearly notated and the music must be completely original to the composer. Electro-acoustic hybrid works are welcome and the electronic parts do not need to be notated. While live performance recordings are desired, MIDI and virtual instrument realizations are allowed.

Entrance Fee: None.

Submission: Submit a PDF score and mp3 audio file (live or MIDI) of your best piece to musiccompetition@calbaptist.edu. In the email subject line please write, “Young Composer Competition”. Additionally, please include your biographical information – educational background, primary instrument, music teachers – and a paragraph detailing your career goals. Applications must be received electronically by January 15, 2022.
