7th St. Petersburg International New Music Festival

The Saint Petersburg Contemporary Music Center reMusik.org announces the 7th St. Petersburg International New Music Festival taking place from July 3 to July 9, 2020 under the direction of composer Mehdi Hosseini. Due to the current coronavirus (COVID-19) situation, the main program of the festival is going to be presented as open online broadcasts on www.remusik.org portal.

The reMusik.org Festival covers various areas of contemporary academic music – experimental, electro-acoustic, electronic music, multimedia projects, free improvisation and others.

The St. Petersburg International Festival reMusik.org is the largest festival of new music in Russia. One of the key ideas of the festival is to show the latest trends in the world of academic music. The program includes only world and Russian premieres of works created in recent decades. The compositions have been selected in a certain way, so that, despite complexity and originality of the musical language, no special training is required from the audience. The music presentation format is not limited to traditional academic concerts and involves performances and experimental shows.

Among the venues annually hosting the festival are the Mariinsky Theater Concert Hall, the New Stage of Alexandrinsky Theater, the St. Petersburg Philharmonia, New Holland Island, Lumiere-Hall creative space, Anikushin’s Workshop, the Rimsky-Korsakov St. Petersburg State Conservatory and others.

The festival is presented by world-famous musicians and well-known ensembles, both classical and experimental ones, specializing in the new music performance. This year, the festival hosts musicians and bands, such as: Les Percussions de Strasbourg (France), Lemniscate (Switzerland), Adapter (Germany), Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble (Russia), Trio SÆITENWIND (Switzerland), cellist Yulia Migunova (Russia) with a solo concert and others.

The finals of the IV International Sergei Slonimsky Composition Competition will take place as part of the VII reMusik.org festival, during which young composers are given the opportunity to hear their compositions performed by Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble. The music scores of the winners will be published by Edition reMusik.org.

The educational program of the New Music Festival reMusik.org includes lectures, presentations and artistic events. Within the framework of the festival, the educational project Online Composition Course (curated by composer Alexander Khubeev) was presented for the second time and was held online from May 21 to June 1 this year due to the global events. It is a creative lab in which young authors from all over the world, as selected by the jury, are given the opportunity to work with famous guest performers and world-famous composers. Within seven days this year, the groups invited to the festival will perform works of the Composition Course participants at the festival. Lectures and individual courses with students have been held by the recognized masters of composer art – Oscar Bianchi (Switzerland), Joanna Bailie (Great Britain), Yuri Kasparov (Russia), Dmitri Kourliandski (Russia) and Raphaël Cendo (France).

The festival program includes works by composers such as Raphaël Cendo, Katharina Rosenberger, Dmitri Kourliandski, Joanna Bailie, Gary Berger, Yuri Kasparov, Svetlana Lavrova, Arturo Corrales, Natacha Diels, Vladimir Rannev, Joan Gomez Alemany, Alexandra Korableva, Simone Cardini, Philippe Hurel, Oscar Bianchi, Arman Gushchyan, Alexandra Filonenko, Jannik Giger, Cathy Van Eck, Yuri Akbalkan, Andreas Eduardo Frank, Michael Beil and others.
