BIOGRAPHY

A young generation Thai composer based in New York, the recipients of 2018 ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Award, Piyawat Louilarpprasert has been awarded several grants and composition prizes such as Sage Fellowship (Cornell University, NY), The Charles Stewart Richardson Scholar Award (Royal College of Music, UK), Fund for Classical Promotion Under the Patronage HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana (TH), Sergei Slonimsky Composition Award 2018, Royal Concerto Competition 2017 (Orchestral composition winner, UK), Nonclassical Music Competition (Gabriel Prokofiev, UK), Winner of Léon Goossens Prize 2016 (the best contemporary oboe music), Princess Galyani Vadhana Youth Orchestra Award 2015, Asia-Pacific Saxophone Composition Award 2015 (saxophone concerto composition winner), SEADOM Composition Award 2015 (wind orchestral composition winner), Young Thai Artists Awards, Asian Composer League 2014 (electro acoustic music) and Young Composers in Southeast Asia Competition 2013. In 2017, he was a composer in residence at KulturKontakt 2017 (AIR), Vienna, offered by the Austrian Federal Chancellery and Music Austria. He received commissions by Riot Ensemble (UK), Ensemble Platypus (Vienna) and Ensemble Vertixe Sonora (Spain). Recently, he won the prestige Concerto Prize with his piece, To nowhere am I straying for Orchestra and received a £4,000 commission for 95th the Charles’s Celebration (2020). As a new generation of Thai composer, he is a guest composer for Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra, his latest symphony will be performed in TPO Asian Tour in August 2018, in Thailand and Cambodia.

Piyawat works largely within the realm of contemporary classical music, electroacoustic music and Thai traditional instruments. His works observe the originality of sound and personalities of his musical languages for manifesting the sound world within musical structure and exploring the individual characteristics of his collaborators (both musicians and non-musicians). His compositions have been performed more than 10 countries in Asia, Europe and United States. His music has drawn attention in numerous music festivals such as Saint Petersburg New Music Festival 2018, Kulturkontakt Vienna 2017, Lucerne Festival 2016, Orkest Ereprijs Young Composer Meeting 2017, Gaudeamus Musikweek 2016, China – ASEAN Music Week 2016, TENSO 2016, Work in Progress Korean New Music Festival 2015, Darmstadt New Music Festival 2014, London National Portrait 2015, Mozart of Tomorrow 2015 (UK), Musica y Arte: Correspondencias Sonoras 2016, Asian Composer League 2014 and Dian Red Kechil Young Composers Residency 2015.

He collaborated with several established ensembles and orchestras such as Lucerne Alumni Ensemble, Orkest Ereprijs, Oerknal!, Ensemble Platypus, Ensemble Reconsil, Ensemble Surplus, Ensemble Mozaik, ASEAN Contemporary Ensemble, University Cincinnati Chamber Players, Mahidol University Orchestras, Vienna Improvisor Orchestra, University of Philippines Symphonic Band, Royal Northern Sinfonia, Stockport Youth Orchestra, RCM Philharmonic Orchestra, and Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra. Some of his music were broadcasted in Radio New Zealand and BBC radio 3. He also worked with renowned composers such as Wolfgang Rihm, Olga Neuwirth, Chaya Czernowin, Helmut Lachenmann, Zygmount Krauze, Ken Ueno and many others.

Piyawat is currently studying D.M.A. in composition at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York with Kevin Ernste, Marianthi Papalexandri Alexandri and Roberto Sierra. He has obtained his Bachelor’s degree in composition with Valeriy Rizayev and conducting with Pamornpan Komolpamorn at College of Music, Mahidol University, Thailand in 2011-15, Master’s degree in Composition and Conducting at Royal College of Music, London with Dai Fujikura, Jonathan Cole and Gilbert Nuono in 2017.

Apart from composing music, he also founded the Thailand Music and Art Organisation (TMAO) – its aim is to create and promote contemporary music and art internationally since 2016, as well as Tacet(i) Ensemble since 2013 as a director and conductor. Tacet(i) created variety of works, projects such as “CMC Experimental Sound Project No.1: Hor”, a collaborative works with Thai-artist, “Shuttling the Space “(Sponsor by Japan Foundation), a broadcasted nationwide, “ Thai Talented Composer ” on MU Channel, Thailand International Composition Festival Call for scores for young composer 2016, Saxophone and Composition Academy in 24 – 27 April 2017 (Thailand).
