The Ensemble of Independent Musicians is a St. Petersburg-based collective specializing in the performance of 20th and 21st-century repertoire. Founded in 2023 by graduates of the N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov St. Petersburg Conservatory, the group functions as a versatile music formation that organizes concerts, lectures, and open calls to promote the works of both Russian and international composers. The ensemble’s core quintet features Maria Molodykh (flute), Arseny Davydov (clarinet), Maria Lysikova and Alisa Gubanova (violin), Daria Lutsenko (cello), and Valeria Dolgushina (piano).
The ensemble has performed at major venues including the New Stage of the Alexandrinsky Theater, the Second Stage of the Bolshoi Drama Theater, the S. Kuryokhin Center for Contemporary Art, the Sheremetev Palace, and the “Community” space on New Holland Island. Their geography also extends to the Moscow House of Composers, the DOM Cultural Center, and the Art Center in Tchaikovsky.
Since its inception, the group has been a frequent participant in prestigious contemporary music forums. In 2023, they took part in the IV Performing Workshop of Modern Academic Music (MASM) in Moscow. They were featured at the “Sound Paths” festival in 2023 and 2024, and participated in the International Academy of Young Composers in Tchaikovsky in 2024.
In 2025, the ensemble became the permanent performers for Nastasya Khrushcheva’s ballet The Meek (dir. A. Kononov). That same year, the group launched two open calls for composers, resulting in the premiere of the “Baroque Mixtape” and “Space of White” programs in St. Petersburg and Moscow, which featured new works written specifically for the ensemble. In 2025, soloists from the ensemble were also named winners of the “Notes and Quotas” program of the Union of Composers of Russia.
The XIII St. Petersburg International New Music Festival will take place from May 23 to June 5, 2026, serving as Russia’s premier annual contemporary music forum. Under the artistic direction of composer Mehdi Hosseini, the two-week event features more than 50 events spanning experimental, electroacoustic, electronic music, and multimedia projects. The unique format extends beyond traditional concerts to include installations, interdisciplinary collaborations, and a comprehensive educational program offering lectures, panel discussions, and composition courses. Detailed festival information, scheduling, and history are available on the About Page.
The festival brings together distinguished performers and specialized ensembles, including Ensemble Répons, the Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble, and the St. Petersburg Improvisers Orchestra alongside other ensembles and acclaimed solo artists. These diverse presentations and experimental artistic practices will unfold across the city’s leading cultural venues, such as the Mariinsky Theatre Concert Hall, New Holland Island, and the Alexandrinsky Theatre New Stage.
